During a meeting with President of the European Council Donald Tusk, who began a working visit to Ukraine, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko emphasized the importance of this visit on these remarkable days for our country.
"I am sincerely glad to welcome a good friend of Ukraine, a reliable partner Donald Tusk on these deeply symbolic days for Ukraine," Petro Poroshenko said and reminded that on these days, on February 18, 2014, officers of the special unit "Berkut" were shooting the men from the 14th hundred of self-defense in the Mariyinsky park.
"This happened before my eyes. And these impressions will last forever. On these days Ukraine and the world bow heads to the sacrificial feat of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, who gave their lives for a new and democratic Ukraine," the Head of State emphasized.
"The only thing aspired by those who came to the streets during the Revolution of Dignity was the return of our country to the family of European nations, the signing of the Association Agreement," he said and noted the personal role of President Donald Tusk in this process.
"For freedom and democracy to prevail in Ukraine. It was a struggle for European values. It is very important for me that the reforms our team is currently implementing in Ukraine and the support that we have from the EU leadership … are not in vain," the President said.
The Head of State added: "They gave the country the last chance for changes, for a successful future. And this future must be in a free European family of nations".
Petro Poroshenko thanked Donald Tusk for his current visit to Ukraine.
"I want to pay tribute to the whole Ukrainian nation. I'm sure you have good reasons to be proud. This is something very unique when you simultaneously carried out effective reforms in the country and defended your nation in the fight against ruthless and cynical aggression," President of the European Council Donald Tusk said.
Donald Tusk noted: "I believe this is the best way to honor the victims of the Revolution - to make efforts to continue the reforms, to achieve the best standards of democracy, legislation".
He also added that it was a personal privilege for him to be in Ukraine. "It's nice to be among friends," he said.
