President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that this year the world and Ukraine recall the anniversaries of tragic events - the 75th anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people, the terrible crimes of the communist regime against humanity, the 80th anniversary of the Second World War, which should become an important lesson to avoid the repeat in the future. It was stated by Petro Poroshenko during a speech at the ceremony commemorating the victims of political repression on the territory of the Bykivnia Graves State Historical and Memorial Preserve.
"This year reminds not only us, but also the whole world of important historical lessons. Yesterday we honored the seventy-fifth anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people. And on September 1, the world will mark the eightieth anniversary of the Second World War. Then, due to the notorious policy of reconciliation with the aggressor, the deployment of the largest conflict in the history of mankind was allowed," he said.
The Head of State stressed that the terrible crimes of the communist regime against humanity were made possible, inter alia, by the loss of Ukrainian statehood, which we could not defend during the time of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921. "Our people paid too high price for miscalculations. Miscalculations that were made one hundred years ago. We should not allow even the thought of repeating that bitter experience again," he added.
"Therefore, we always confirm the thesis of the irreversibility of our European course, the European course of Ukraine. The inadmissibility of returning Ukraine to the bosom of the Russian Federation. On the ground, where trees grow from human blood, there can be no talks about political overture with the aggressor and heir to the regime that shed this blood," the President emphasized.
"We, dear friends, are very well aware of this and have never retreated from the chosen path. In fact, we have completed the process of decommunization in our state over the last five years. We have forbidden the communist ideology. The Orthodox Church in Ukraine has received the Tomos of autocephaly from the Ecumenical Patriarch. A capable Ukrainian army has been created, which reliably protects us from invaders in the war unleashed by the Moscow regime. Significant progress has been made in cooperation with the countries - world leaders and international institutions, a series of reforms has been carried out in the direction of adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to European standards," Petro Poroshenko noted.
The Head of State emphasized: “The tragedy of communist terror must become a lesson for the future and a reliable safety against the attempts to revive the "Russian world" on our land”.
"Today, on the eastern border of Europe, Ukraine is holding the line against a new invasion, now on the part of the successor of the Bolshevik empire - the Russian Federation. The confrontation with a much stronger armed aggressor became possible due to the very effective and coherent actions of Ukraine and the leaders of the free world - the US, the EU, the G7, all those who form a strong coalition of the world in support of Ukraine," he emphasized.
The President is hopeful that the Ukrainian people will be further supported by the world community in the future. "I firmly believe that we will be able to restore our sovereignty, our territorial integrity only with such support and through diplomatic pressure on the aggressor. Return the Ukrainian sovereignty and the Ukrainian flag to each piece of land occupied by the aggressor, return Crimea to Ukraine, return Donbas," he summed up.
