During the working visit to Cherkasy region, President Petro Poroshenko visited the center of preparation of border guards.
The President stressed that the State Border Service has to solve a unique task. "In conditions of war, the state usually closes the border, restricts the movement of people. Instead, Ukraine wants to remain open for economic contacts, education, science, culture, tourism," Petro Poroshenko said.
“The task of the State Border Service is to guarantee a high level of safety for Ukrainian citizens in conditions of a hybrid war with Russia, terrorist threats, global migration crisis,” the President noted. At the same time, he stressed that for this purpose, additional measures were taken to strengthen control over entry into Ukraine.
In particular, the system of biometric control of foreigners was deployed in short terms at checkpoints. This is especially related to people coming from the aggressor country.
The Supreme Commander-in-Chief noted the achievements of the center and high results in the preparation of border guards recognized by our American and European partners. The President thanked everyone who "created and sustains the authority of the Center by his work, professionalism and patriotism".
According to him, over 25 years of its existence, the educational institution has trained more than 100 thousand junior specialists for border guard authorities. A significant part of them ensures the security of our country throughout the perimeter of the state border and heroically participates in the JFO.
The President reminded that this year Ukrainian border guards celebrated the centenary of their service, as in 1918, the first border agency of the independent Ukrainian state - the separate corps of border guard of the Ukrainian People's Republic was created.
"At that time, just as today, the Ukrainian state faced the necessity to protect itself from Russian aggression. At that time, just as today, there were enough courageous and patriotic soldiers and officers ready to defend Ukraine. But unfortunately, a hundred years ago, because of the discord of politicians, because of the underestimation of the enemy, because of the inability to unite society around a single goal - the defense of independence, our state found itself in the Russian imperial yoke," he said.
"I insist - we must learn to draw conclusions from history lessons, and we do it. For the first time in 27 years, Ukraine has a powerful army capable of stopping the aggressor. Ukraine has a modern and capable State Border Service, which is an important component of the security and defense sector acquiring the ability to act in accordance with NATO standards and best practices in the world," the Head of State emphasized.
